WHAT IS TMT STEEL?

TMT bars, also known as Thermo-Mechanically Treated bars, are widely used in the construction industry as reinforcement bars for concrete structures. These bars are manufactured using a combination of mechanical and thermal processes.

The manufacturing process of TMT bars involves three stages:

  1. Hot Rolling: Initially, steel billets are heated at a very high temperature and then passed through rolling mills. This process transforms the billets into long, thin ribbed bars.

  2. Quenching: The hot-rolled bars are then rapidly cooled using water jets or air jets. This rapid cooling is known as quenching, and it hardens the outer layer of the bar while keeping the inner core relatively soft and ductile.

  3. Tempering: The quenched bars are subsequently subjected to controlled heating, which is called tempering. This heating process softens the outer layer and relieves the internal stresses, making the bars more flexible and durable.

The unique combination of strength and flexibility obtained through the TMT manufacturing process makes these bars suitable for construction purposes. TMT bars offer several advantages, including:

  1. High Strength: TMT bars have high tensile strength and can withstand heavy loads and stress, making them ideal for reinforcing concrete structures.

  2. Ductility: The tempered core of TMT bars provides good ductility, allowing them to absorb shocks and withstand seismic forces without fracturing easily.

  3. Weldability: TMT bars have excellent weldability, which means they can be easily joined together using standard welding techniques.

  4. Corrosion Resistance: TMT bars have a protective oxide layer on the surface, which provides corrosion resistance and enhances their longevity.

  5. Cost-Effective: TMT bars are cost-effective compared to other types of reinforcement bars, considering their strength and durability.

TMT bars are widely used in the construction of buildings, bridges, dams, and other concrete structures where structural integrity and longevity are crucial. They are available in various grades and sizes to meet different construction requirements.
